I never posted this piece, “Call it Shelter”, from my Story Paintings exhibit in 2021. It felt too personal, too raw to share online. But it recently resurfaced and caught my attention. Its message feels even more resonant today than it did when I created it.

The Cypripedium calceolus orchid once spread across expanses of semi-shaded woodland areas, growing atop humus and limestone outcroppings worldwide. Due to human clearance of its homelands, it has become endangered or threatened in many areas. Because of its declining state, this wild orchid is a protected species in parts of Europe and beyond. Botanists have worked at reintroduction programs, with some of the locations being kept secret.
.
My ongoing quest as an artist is to weave together a story about human’s relationship to threatened species. My goal is to use my platform to shed light on this ongoing issue. One phrase I see repeated over and over when researching endangered species is “human-caused destruction of habitat”. In our desire to exploit the world’s resources, like limestone or timber, we are one-by-one losing our wild species.
