I am beyond elated and humbled to announce that I have won the 2025 Randolph Caldecott Medal. To be among the list of 88 medalists in the history of the award is the honor of a lifetime.
Chooch Helped was written by Andrea L Rogers, published by
Levine Querido, and illustrated by me.
I loved Chooch Helped from the moment I read Andrea’s manuscript, and I poured my heart and soul into the art. All great picture books begin with a great story.
The illustrations are rich with Cherokee symbolism and culture. Every detail in the book has significance and meaning, from the motifs in the background to the details of the characters’ clothing. Though I am new to illustration, I have been a working artist for almost 30 years, and am a lifelong artist of 49 years. Everything in my life has informed my work and led me to this moment, and I believe I have been unconsciously preparing for this work in unknown ways. I am grateful for every struggle and triumph I’ve had along the way because these things have informed and shaped my work.
I feel lucky that, from an early age, my parents believed in me. My mom has always encouraged me to pursue my art and my dreams, despite the winding and impractical path it sometimes took. She never doubted my intuition. My dad taught me to be bold and to take chances. For this, I am ever-grateful.
The book’s editor, Nick Thomas, also believed in my work from the beginning. Nick encouraged me to use my full and authentic voice. Andrea has become a sister and colleague, and her storytelling is something quite special. Joy Chu, the art director for this book, taught me so much about the fine art of illustrating picture books encouragingly and positively. The team at Levine Querido truly believes in the art and craft of bookmaking. They are caring people who believe in giving voice to underrepresented artists and authors. It was a dream team from start to finish.
I have a wonderful husband, a sisterhood with whom I pray and sing with, a community of loving friends, and a family who support me, and only through their support could I have done this.
I give thanks to the ancestors who have paved my path..
