According to Cherokee legend, the wren is known to be the messenger. Through song, the messenger tells her people what is to come in the future. She is known to announce such things as famines, wildfires or ceremonies in neighboring villages.

In this piece the messenger told her people what was to happen to their source of wild foods in the future. Wild potato vines and wild potato flowers are entangled with barbed wire fencing, depicting a tale of the changes that were to come.
